Delicious and Fluffy Stovetop Rice

Learn to make delicious and fluffy rice on the stove top. This method ensures perfectly cooked rice every time, avoiding both hard, undercooked grains and gummy rice. It's a foundational skill for any home cook!
1. Use a ratio of 1 part rice to 1 1/2 parts water (e.g., 2 cups rice to 3 cups water).
2. Rinse your rice thoroughly before cooking. Continue rinsing until the water runs clear. Use a fine mesh strainer to strain off dirty water.
3. Salt your cooking water before bringing the rice to a boil. This ensures your rice does not end up flavorless. Optionally, you can lightly toast your rice in the pan with a little butter or oil before adding water if you have the time.
4. Bring the rice and salted water to a boil. Let it boil uncovered until a few rice granules begin to float at the top of the pan.
5. Place the lid on the pot, leaving a slight crack for venting. Reduce the heat to a low simmer and cook for 15-17 minutes.
6. Turn off the heat and let the rice steam for another 10 minutes. DO NOT lift the lid until the rice has finished cooking and steaming.
7. After steaming, take a fork and gently separate the rice to fluff it.
8. Serve as desired.
